Activities that occurred at a certain time in the past and continued thereafter.

At 11 am I was preparing our lunch.

Activities interrupted by shorter actions.

While my friend was taking a shower, the telephone rang.

While Martha was listening to music, her brother did his homework.

Simultaneous actions (both in the present continuous).

The kids were running and their grandfather was reading an old paper.
